What we normally have is garbage cans that we put about 5 yards apart with about 4 yards separating the sets of garbage cans. Totally, we use a 10 yard area-5 yards in front of the cans and 5 yards behind the cans. The quarterbacks stand in front of the cans about 5 yards away and the coach is in the middle. We have done it a couple of different ways, this year we called it a pat and go where the quarterback pats the ball and the receiver begins his route. The drill is called settle up and noose. What we're trying to do is to teach our receivers to find a soft spot in the zone and sit down and settle up. The second part is the noose that the receiver makes with his hands out in front of his chest to give the quarterback a target. They put their fingertips together and have a nice bend in their elbow. We don't want their hands too far extended from the body and we also don't want their hands too close to their body so that the ball bounces off the chest. After catching the ball then we're going to put it away. We do this as a warm-up drill at the beginning of practice. So it goes. About 50- 75% speed. The quarterback pats the ball to get the receiver running behind the barrels. The receiver begins running behind the barrels and settles down in between the garbage cans to simulate settling into the zone. He will settle up and show the noose. The quarterback will take a 3 to 5 step drop and they do not throw the ball until the receiver shows the noose. Once that receiver shows the quarterback the noose, the quarterback throws the ball. It's not a rocket throw. It's just a nice easy release. When the receiver catches that ball he's gonna put it away and turn up field at least 5 yards, finishing the drill. We have two quarterbacks throwing the ball and two lines of receivers, one on each side, so we've got receivers coming from the right and receivers coming from the left. They settle in between the garbage cans, show the noose, catch the ball, put it away and turn up field 5 yards. At this point we tried to get the ball back to the quarterbacks as quickly as possible. The quarterback has two footballs, the one that he is throwing and one on the ground next to him. After the receiver catches the ball, and turns up field for 5 yards he turns and comes back in between the two sets of garbage cans so that he does not get in the way of the next receiver and sets the ball next to the quarterback and returns to the end of the other line. Once we get this going. We just continue to go through this nonstop and keep guys moving. When the receivers catch the ball we do want them to explode for that last 5 yards as they turn up field. As a coach your job is to make sure that the receivers are settling up in the right spot and showing that noose. As the drill progresses you can have the receivers stop a little closer to the garbage cans. Then what we're going to do as a coach is to tell the quarterback to throw to the shoulders. He will throw to the shoulder furthest away from the garbage can. If the receiver catches the ball toward his left shoulder, then he's going to roll to his left as he puts the ball away and gets up field. He's not going to catch the ball to his left shoulder and turned back to his right because that's where the defender is (simulated by the garbage can). My quarterback is telling the receiver that by throwing to his left shoulder the defender is on his right so turn to is left and get up field. So this is just a drill that we do every day in pre-practice and eventually we build up to about 80% speed.
QB drills, quarterback drills, QB WR drills, wide receiver drills, qb timing, spread offense.
